It’s #WeAreModern Wednesday, and today we’re proud to spotlight Ryan Whiteman of Team MODERN, one of our talented mechanical engineers. Ryan has been part of the MODERN family since 2017, first as an intern and later as a full-time engineer after earning his degree in 2021. With engineering in his blood (his dad, Jim, is our electrical engineering manager), Ryan brings enthusiasm, curiosity and a true passion for problem-solving to every project he touches.
“I started interning at Modern Machinery during my first year of college in 2017. That internship allowed me to spend time in multiple departments and really understand each stage of production and manufacturing. Toward the end of my internship, I moved into engineering and began assisting with 3D machine models and 2D manufacturing drawings. I realized quickly that this was something I loved, and something I was good at, so I changed my major to mechanical engineering.
“Interning at MODERN helped me define my career path. After the internship, I was offered a job and continued working while pursuing my BSME at SVSU, which I completed in 2021.
“Our customers come to MODERN because we’re a true custom machine builder, emphasis on custom. They are always bringing new ideas and innovations to the table, and it’s my job to turn those ideas into reality. I enjoy every step of the process: brainstorming with the customer, designing the machine, creating the 3D models, converting those models into detailed 2D drawings, and ultimately overseeing production to ensure the machine is built to their exact requirements.
“I’m motivated to work hard and build a successful future for my family. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my wife, our dog, and our friends and family. I also love hunting, camping, golfing and skiing.”
